The Back

Back of quilt, Carolyn Morris from Casa Grande, Arizona, (and friends)

Here's Carolyn's details on her wonderful Nickel Bricks adaptation:

"In looking for a quilt for my daughter-in-law I wanted something interesting yet fairly simple as she has 8 kids who will be on and off the quilt a lot!  She liked the Baby Nickels quilt because of the colors and fabrics.  Since I usually make quilts out of darker colors, more neutrals, earth tone colors, my stash had no pastels, small florals etc.  She liked the pattern of the Nickel Bricks but not the colors.  As I studied the Baby Brick pattern I found I simply could not combine the multitude of fabrics without some border or sense of separation as given in the Nickel Brick pattern.  In other patterns she liked the diagonal flows which lead me to do what I did with your pattern.  It took me awhile to figure out how many of each color I needed.  The only restriction on colors was not too much pink which is why the pink section is smaller than the the other colors.

I choose to use three different shades of each color for the borders of each block keeping the same color in each diagonal row.  It got complicated keeping it straight but my paper layout worked for keeping me organized.  To make a king sized quilt  (98"x 104") required 400 individual blocks before sewing them into four blocks.  I also quilted it as I went with a free motion pattern that allowed me to never have the bulk of the quilt under the arm of the machine.  It was fun to work on and I got many compliments from our quilting group who watched me from the time I began sewing to finish.

It is her Christmas present and is currently under her tree in TX so she hasn't seen it yet.  Making the quilt as you designed it with one color for all the borders would have been much simpler but I never seem to do things the simple way!  I also appliquéd in each corner a heart as the blank cornerstone just needed something.

Thanks for the pattern book.  I am sure it will give me other ideas over the years." ...Carolyn Morris, December 11, 2009

As an update--

"My DIL loved it!  When I told her that some friends would gladly take it if she didn't like it.  Her response as she laughed, "Out of my cold dead hands they'd have to take it!" ...Carolyn Morris, January 31, 2010.

Good Job, Carolyn, and thanks for sharing with us!

"Loose Change" News:

Le Ann & I have finally finished all of the manuscript and quilts for "More Loose Change".  It's now being prepared for an October/November release from Martingale (That Patchwork Place).  Our Technical Editor on this one is Nancy Mahoney.

We are really excited and hope this book will be even better (if possible) than the first.

Life Notes:

Well, Mom is settled in next door....but she still has made about 5 trips back to Arkansas for more of her "things".  Hopefully she has only one more trip to make.  Next she still has a couple of rooms full of boxes to sort out and put up.  She's made an effort to unload one box/tub each day.  But then there's still the houseful in Edmond......sigh.

We just had another major snow/ice event here.  About 8" Friday night on top of about 2" of ice.  We're just glad the power didn't go out...yet.  My car looks like an igloo out there.

Ice/Snow January 2010

At least it's not as bad as the last one before Christmas:

Snow Xmas 2009

Though we didn't have as much ice the last time, mostly snow.

Snow Xmas 2009

(That's the fire hydrant in the front yard)

Wow, wouldn't want to be standing under those things when they break off!  I took this in the afternoon here today.

I Must Mention.....

Finally!  A new BOM freebie project on the free page.  This is an adorable little quilt, with teeny-tiny blocks (4" & 6").  Each month is one step in a calendar quilt wall hanging.  January was Snowflakes, and this month, February, is, of course, valentines!  Those of you who wish to adapt to your own little block themes, just remember to make your blocks the same size as mine and always finish out at 36" in length (36 1/2" unfinished).  You may use all the same fabric for the background, or mix up background fabrics, like me.  I'm using 3 different cream-on-cream background fabrics.  No fabric requirements for the blocks--use up your stash!!

I don't have the finished pattern available for purchase at this time, but plan to have it ready in a couple of months for those of you who can't wait for 12 months to complete it.

Have fun!
