This was fun!
**These "smudged" photos will be used until such time as I can obtain permission to display the originals from the owner of the trademark on the bandana, currently pending.
First a trip to the local (insert motorcycle trademark owner here) dealership for the "perfect" bandana for the center medallion. Then the pattern for it from Just Quilt It! (It's their "Sports Quilt" pattern). Then the perfect "flame" fabric for the really hot corner sections. Kaufman makes this fabric shown here. I added enough black to the bandana to get the center section to measure what the pattern calls for. I made this for my 33-yo son to replace the one I made back when he was a teenager and into **s. He had absolutely worn out the old one and requested a new one. So this was for his Christmas present. Everyone who has seen it now wants one. So---back to the dealership again....maybe red/white/blue this time.
Here's a close-up of the center:

If you plan to make this quilt, or one like it, be sure to select a bandana that reads diagonally across the center for the large quilt. For their smaller version, you could use a straight-set bandana. Another thing I discovered about using bandanas--when you pre-wash them, they shrink to a rectangular shape (It's not noticeable). Therefore, you have to adjust how much you add to it to make it "square".
Ok, let's talk a little about copyrights and trademarks, etc. I know, you're thinking--"GAG, BORING!" But people, this is serious business. And in spite of seeming to be a little "flip" about this, I am serious. Copyright infringements are rampant in the quilting business too. To the point that some quilting pattern designers are feeling defeated and are surrendering, never to design any pattern ever again.
I've noticed, too, working part time in a quilt store, just how ignorant people can be about copyrights. Copyright means "THE RIGHT TO COPY!!!" You don't have the right to copy anyone else's work! It's that simple.
For example, if you take a class at a local quilt store, which includes a written, copyrighted instruction sheet from your instructor--you DO NOT have the right to copy it and spread it out amongst your friends at church or at the local quilt guild. Now, you CAN tell them where to go and take the class themselves!
Another one, someone once ask me if it was ok to print out my Short & Scrappy Quilt series when it was on the free page, for those who don't have a computer. "I mean after all, they are FREE?" NO WAY! They can order the pattern, for crying out loud.
Most patterns you buy are intended for one-time, personal, non-business related use. I don't know how many times I've heard of people buying a pattern and making 10 quilts off of it TO SELL. This is a NONO. You have to have permission from the copyright owner to do this and would probably involve a small fee, or heck, just buy another pattern! For instance on the quilt above, I bought the pattern, bought the bandana, made it for a gift for my son. If I were to sell three of them? Three bandanas and three patterns too. Some pattern designers will allow a certain amount of retail quilts to be made from one pattern, but it's best to ask. And, you know what? I would also have to have permission from the bandana maker too! This could easily be a franchise infringement and some places (like colleges and certain large amusement parks) will fiercely litigate.
Visit Sylvia Landman's site for a good explanation and answers to copyright questions here: http://www.sylvias-studio.com/copyright.htm
Sorry to be cranky about this, the whole thing is exasperating, I know. Just be careful and consider us poor little pattern designers trying to feed our husbands and children, next time you start to make a copy of anything.
Site seeing, anyone?

http://www.dancingpaul.com/ I hate to admit it, but I spent (wasted?) about an hour here playing with this silly site. It's great fun!

Tag Line of the Month:
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it
Next month I'm hoping to begin a new series of quilt patterns for "absolute beginners". This series will be very, very basic small projects for those out there who are just getting in to this marvelous pastime.
Here's wishing the best for all of you in the coming new year.
May you always have a quilt in the hoop, I try to.

Cya,
Claudia
