TWISTED MYSTERY

This is so much fun on the forum!  Lynn (LynnWin41) hosts this mystery swap (annually now).  It's always unexpected fun.

This year my "twisted sister" was Debbie McDaniel, Mountain View, Arkansas.  She made the quilt above from fabrics I provided anonymously.  She had no idea she was making it for me--And I had no idea she was the one making it.  Lynn handles all the mailing to and fro and "pairing up" of applicants and recipients.

Each participant receives a fabric package in the mail from Lynn, makes a quilt from that fabric, mails it back to Lynn, who in turn mails it back to the original owner of the fabric.  I'm glad Lynn keeps everything straight, cuz it could get confusing!  Participants are not allowed to discuss what fabrics she has, but can discuss what progress she is making on it, what pattern she is using, etc.  As long as no one gives any information away.  Each quilt is made completely finished.

I furnished 1930's reproduction fabrics for the swap this year.  I normally don't enjoy working on such prints, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to own something without the work involved.  Debbie found a pattern on the Quilters' Cache called "Easy Pieced Butterfly".  She said it kept "calling" to her, so that was what she used.  Debbie embellished the little appliquéd flowers with butterfly beads stitched on in the center of each flower.

Pretty, huh?  But wait.....who's quilt did I make, you ask???

Well, I had NO IDEA, but the fabric sent to me belonged to Lynn herself!  It was a really nice Laurel Burch Christmas Kitties focal fabric along with some really bright blender fabrics.  It was a challenge for me to come up with something.  I was thinking about a lone star, but the busyness of the focal fabric wouldn't be suitable for the background or the tiny star pieces.  So I tried out....yes...a frenzied 4 patch.  Yet I ended up using fussy cuts from some of the focal and a few "frenzied" centers in a simple block.  Here's Lynn's quilt and a closeup of one block.

What Am I Working On?

I've decided in 2008 I'm not going to list what I'm NOT working on anymore.  It's being the same old list every month, and it seems it just depresses me to keep repeating all the things I haven't finished yet.  So here's a more realistic list of things I HOPE to work on in 2008.

Here's my list:

1.  Spend more time hand quilting (like that's gonna' happen).

2.  Organize/cut scraps into strips of different widths (in my dreams, and I'd have to do #6 first).

3.  Spend less money on fabrics, work from stash only (Say what?  Maybe I could just continue borrowing from friends' stash).

4.  Finish at least one UFO every other month (probably every other year).

5.  Go to guild meetings regularly (maybe, but I'd have to give up watching Deal or No Deal).

6.  Change the blade in my rotary cutter (It goes tick, tick, tick across the fabric now).

....well, maybe I can do the last one to start with.
