GREETINGS! -----
Butterfly Top

Finally, One Down, Millions to go.......
This quilt top was on my "To Do" list for what seems like years (probably a few months). It's not mine, unfortunately, though. Forty-eight embroidered butterfly blocks (very well done, btw). My friend, Regina Mann is scheduled to hand quilt this--thank goodness I don't have to. :-)
I thought I'd share a little about squaring up blocks for such a project.
The first thing I noticed, was that not all the blocks were the same size after embroidering. Some were 10", some were10 1/2", etc. Then the second thing I noticed was that not all of the butterflies were in the center of its block. Therefore, if the butterfly was too far to the right or left, up or down, it would stand out from the others when set together. That wouldn't do. So what are you suppose to do?
First, compare the blocks with the most extreme problems. I found one such block that was off-center to the left and it seemed to be the smallest of the blocks at just under 10" square. After comparing such "problem children", I determined that all the blocks needed to be no less than 9 1/2".
Second, find the right size ruler. I know you could use what you have on hand, like a 12 1/2" or whatever larger you have. But I've found that the easiest and fastest way is to have the right tools to begin with. Rulers come in all sizes of squares. If you don't have a 9 1/2" square ruler, use that as an excuse to go shopping!!
Third, use stickers to indicate positions on your ruler. Using, the "problem child" block and placing the ruler on top of it, I marked the ruler with a flower sticker to indicate where the top of the butterfly's little head is. Position the ruler with the "flower" on the little butterfly head on each of the blocks, so each block will be consistent and identical.
One other thing you might want to do at this point is mark any quilting lines BEFORE you set the blocks in sashed rows. Since I knew Regina was going to quilt the blocks with a 1" diagonal gridwork, I marked them before they were set together. Now she won't have to strain herself bending over and spreading out the top to mark it. Her only marking chore will be marking the sashing and borders.
Memorial Day Picnic
Eden Mennonite Church always has a memorial day service and then a picnic with children's programs and volunteers singing, etc. Afterwards they hold their quilt auction to raise funds for their women's missions. The only problem this year was the silly weather. Auctioning had to be cut short when a downpour threatened and everyone ran for shelter. :-)
Some remaining items will be sold during their Day in the Country Festival to be held on the weekend of September 29, 2007. For info call (918)-543-2739.
What Am I Working On?
Still madly working on projects for our 2008 book. I'm so eager to share photos with you, but can't, and it's frustrating!
So I'm still repeating the old list minus the one project above that I finished! YAY! I still haven't started on the mourning quilt for my mother-in-law. I've not been working on the hand quilting on Bob's quilt in the floor hoop. Progressing none. Still have the appliquéd star cluster quilt for myself and a penguin block quilt to assemble. And the peacock quilt still remains in the hand quilting frame where it is still gathering more dust..
The Quilt Shoppe Forum News:
We have another Scramble underway - fat quarters this time in green prints. Deadline is July 1.
Lynn (lynnwin) is hosting a fabric swap montly now called "Nickels, Dimes, & Quarters". Each month we swap 5" squares, 10" squares, or 2.5" strips in a specified color or theme. As of yet (June 1) she hasn't announced what's in store for June yet.
Char has another swap about to close, so hurry up! It's called "Red/White/Blue Parade".
We are also making blocks for a comfort quilt for our own forum co-owner, Irish Karen. If you are able to make a 12 1/2" block for her, let us know and send to me before June 30.
