GREETINGS!.......

I don't know where to begin to chat about this quilt top. Well, to begin with I guess, the gals at the Sewing Society asked me to make a quilt from a book they had. (Sandra Haatch's "Log Cabin Quilts"). The only thing is, the quilt in the book was only like 48" square. They wanted BIG. And, the book utilized the foundation piecing method. (Where you use either a printed muslin foundation or printed paper foundation. And I don't do that). This was to be for their contribution to the Menn. Central Commitee state Relief Sale in Enid, Oklahoma, Fall, 2006. They never know how long it will take them to get a project hand quilted, so they try to plan ahead about a year or so.
It was such a beautiful quilt in the book, I said "SURE!". Oh boy.
SOooo, I opened up EQ and drew a few blocks, set them in a variation of a broken star setting, printed out the templates, measured them so I would know how wide to cut strips and in that way I could use a quick strip method. Sounds simple enough, huh? HA!
First of all, you have to consider that EQ allows a PERFECT 1/4" seam allowance. I don't know anyone that has that-- in REAL life anyway. Second, I was dealing with eighths and sixteenths of an inch on cutting these strips. The math was a quilting nightmare. Anyway, I carefully measured all the strips and was sure I had a pretty good 1/4" seam allowance as I sewed merrily along.
In no time at all, I had all of the 8 inside squares completed. Piece of cake! And they measured exactly what they were supposed to! Shoot--I'd have this thing whupped in another day or so. On with the diamond sections! I just whirred right thru them too! Wow! I thought I could make these things in my sleep! I started putting the shapes together on the design wall. UH OH--what's the deal?
I had made 32 diamond sections. All with the dark red on the tip of the diamond shape. I had never even noticed that half of them have the dark red on their side. OMgosh.
I ripped out half of those suckers, strip by strip. Luckily, the strips don't have to be replaced. After disassembling them, you just move the piece to it's proper place, and resew. A hard lesson learned. I'll sure know better NEXT time.
Then I happened to notice that the diamond sections, didn't quite fit the square sections. The diamond sections were bigger. I ended up having to cut each diamond section down by 1/2" on 2 sides. This was due to my "imperfect" seam allowance.
Finally--I was able to start assembling the sections. EVERY SINGLE INTERSECTION IS A "Y" SEAM!!--Arghhhhhhh! At least the corner sections were easy and straight. But, of course, I had to miter the borders, just to make that part harder.

I turned it in to the ladies last Thursday and marked it for their hand quilting. I swore I wouldn't make this again any time soon.
Hmmmmm, the local library is needing a fund-raising quilt. Wonder how it would look in icy and dark blues?
The Quilt Shoppe Forum News:
The fall forum block lottery drawing will be held this month. Irish Karen is "over" her Halloween pranks now and starting a "Little House on the Prairie" theme swap. Char's flannel swap is winding down and she has started the "A" Train (A is for Appliqué). The Bricks Scramble drawing for the 188 brick blocks was won by Jane (Tartan). The Antique Tile Scramble is going strong. Grace (Eriksnana) won the Monthly Mystery Member prize for October. Lots of activities! To join in go to: http://forums.delphiforums.com/quiltshoppe

Quilting News Network -- News -- Did anyone happen to see the segments of "show and tell" by the Black Forest Quilters in Germany? Claudia Heber, a Black Forest member, had a segment of her own. And the first quilt -- her "Toy Box" quilt from Claudias Quilt Shoppe. com! She also displayed her awesome Dear Jane quilt. Good job, Claudia! (and I like her name, too!).
