TOO MUCH FUN!

I call these "Four-Patch Frenzies".  I'm making one for each grandchild for Christmas this year.  They were more or less inspired by the book "One Block Wonders" by Maxine Rosenthal.  But I had to do my own variation.

When making kaleidoscope/stack and whack quilts, a person has to deal with a lot of blocks with bias edges.  Very unhandy and causes all kinds of distortions sometimes.  And basically you are dealing with fabric strips.  My variation works with squares and all edges are on the straight of grain.  It's very quick and very easy.

Basically what you are doing is working with only one fabric.  For example, here's the fabric, the only fabric, used on Sharon's quilt:  (I hope I don't have to delete these pictures because of some kind of trademark infringement.  That's not my intention).

Sharon's MM fabric

It helps to select fabrics with very few colors, to get the most visual effect.  The fabric is stacked into identical layers, and cut into 4 identical triangles.  When pieced, they form blocks with a kaleidoscope effect:

Sharon's Close Up

Fun huh?  Then after the blocks are pieced, they are placed on the design wall and the fun begins!  Moving blocks around until you get an overall visual effect is addictive!  It takes a little while, but there are many possibilities of arrangements.  In Sharon's quilt, for example, I tried to get all the darker blocks in one corner and graduate light/darks from there.  It takes a little time, and sometimes makes you dizzy.  Perhaps this one should be called "Mickey in a Blender" or "Mickey's Nervous Breakdown".  HA!

Here are pictures of two of the grandsons' quilts pieced so far.  I hope these pictures don't make the page too much for you to download.  The first is Austin's, from dinosaur fabrics:  I'll insert the final quilt top, then the close-up of blocks, then the original fabric used.

The second is Kenny's from lizard fabric.  I call it "Lizard Salad".

Now, on to the next two grandsons from these two fabrics:

Perhaps have those pictures next month (hopefully)!

In case you're wondering, I don't have the instructions in pattern form yet.  Check back next month and we'll see what happens.

What Am I Working On?

Obviously, I've been working on the grandkids' quilts.  But there's something new for you!!!

Check out on the free page the new Simple Scrappy Treasures pattern!  I think you'll really enjoy this13-month project.  A great stashbuster!  And who doesn't love scrappy quilts?

I finished the Twisted Mystery project, and my favorite longarm quilter has it ready for me to pick up.  I still haven't started on the mourning quilt for my mother-in-law.  I've not been working on the hand quilting on Bob's quilt in the floor hoop.  Progressing none.   Still have the appliquéd star cluster quilt for myself and a penguin block quilt to assemble.  And the peacock quilt still remains in the hand quilting frame where it is still gathering more dust.

Don't forget to order your copy of my new book out from Leisure Arts "Slash Your Stash--8 Recipes to Reduce Your Stash"!

To purchase from me on this website, go HERE.  You can also purchase from Leisure Arts, and from Amazon as well.  And now you can buy at Connecting Threads, too!

The Quilt Shoppe Forum News:

Lynn (lynnwin) is hosting a fabric swap monthly now called "Nickels, Dimes, & Quarters".  Each month we swap 5" squares, 10" squares, or 2.5" strips in a specified color or theme.  The swap for September was Dimes in fall/autumn fabrics--boy, were they gorgeous!  For October she has us swapping nickel squares in reproduction civil war and 1930's fabrics.

Irish Karen has started a new Nine Patch & Snowball swap.  The schoolhouse block swap is underway now too.

We have another scramble/lotto going on also--this time with string-pieced blocks called "Strings Make Me Sing!".

Site-Seeing
(sites open in new window)

I'm afraid I haven't been online surfing much this month.  My Mother-in-law had to undergo some surgery and we have been spending most of our time back and forth to the hospital and home.  She is recovering nicely now, still some occasional doctor appointments, but hopefully things will be back to normal soon.  But I'll be looking out for some new and interesting sites for you for next month for sure!

Tag Line of the Month

It's amazing how grandparents seem so young once you become one.

Me, Short Hair

May you always have a quilt in the hoop,
