Twisted Mystery Quilt

Sometimes we have a special promotion on our forum.  Lynn Winguard, who lives in California, hosted this rather different kind of swap.

Here's how it works:  Each person gathers up enough coordinating fabrics to fill a priority flat-rate envelope and sends it to the hostess.  The idea is to put in fabrics that you would like to have in a quilt made for yourself.  Upon arrival of all of the envelopes, the hostess sends each envelope on to a different member of the swap.  No one but the hostess knows whose envelope is sent to whom.  Then upon receiving the exchanged envelope, each member makes a lap-size quilt or wallhanging with the contents she receives.  No one knows whose quilt they are making!  And no one knows who's making one for them!  Kinda twisted, huh?

At the end of the allotted time, finished quilts are sent back to the hostess.  The hostess returns them to the rightful owners and everyone's mystery is solved.

My own "twisted mystery sister" was Debbie in Arkansas.  Here's what she made for me:

  Quilters Are Angels
"Quilters are Angels---With Hearts of Gold"

Debbie certainly is a "quilting angel" !  I have this on the wall here in the computer room.  It's a very pleasant reminder of the gals in the forum.

My mystery sister was Kate in England.  She sent the most beautiful fabrics and it sure made my job a lot easier!  We had 3 months time to make the quilt, more than enough to do some handwork.  So I decided to do a little applique, and do my favorite--lone star.  This star was a little different though.  The size was small, so I basically just "guessed" at the size of the strips for the diamond shapes.  Our quilts were not to exceed a certain size limit and after I had the diamond sections made, I realized it was going to be too big.  So I just trimmed down the sections.  Not that noticeable, but I really liked the way it turned out with the trimmed-down sections.  Makes it rather unique in shape I think.  :-)

The applique was a breeze, such small blocks--smaller than I'm used to working with anyway.  Here's a closer view:

Twisted Mystery Close Up

My friend, Donna Titsworth, did the machine quilting on it.  And as usual, did an excellent job.  (Not shown here).  She did a lot of stippling and fancy things.

Now the only problem is that Kate has never received the quilt!!!!  As of this date, her quilt has not made it back to England for some unknown reason.  It sometimes takes quite a while for overseas deliveries there, but we are becoming quite concerned at this point.  :-(

What Am I Working On?

I've spent the last month working on the next raffle quilt for the local library.  I finished it last week and sent it directly to the machine quilter's.  It is a "Shakespeare in the Park" pattern by Judy Martin.  I was so sick of working on it, I didn't even photograph it first.  But I will after it's quilted, I promise. I worked on a quilt top for a client today, all day.  Seems I underestimated the border fabric, and when I was almost done, adding the last border, I came up about 20" short!  ARGH!!  It will have to be set aside until I can obtain more of the fabric--soon I hope.  I still haven't started on the mourning quilt for my mother-in-law.  I've been working some more on the hand quilting on Bob's quilt in the floor hoop.  Progressing some.   Still have the appliquéd star cluster quilt for myself, and the butterfly block collection to assemble for a client, and another wall hanging on the design wall now for a client.  Oh, and a penguin block quilt to assemble.  And the peacock quilt still remains in the hand quilting frame.

The Quilt Shoppe Forum News:

Our "Batik Beauties" scramble was won by Julie Clarke in Australia!  Julie won a total of 44 batik beauty blocks.

Our next block scramble drawing is November 1 for "Stacked Squares"--which is 12" blocks using all kinds of scrappy batik fabrics.  Char has a new swap starting using "coffee cup" blocks.  We will also be having a "stacked square" swap soon.  And Lynn will be announcing shortly of the upcoming "Twisted Mystery II".
